  • Counseling for Anxiety

    Anxiety is the close cousin from depression. In fact, it is probably more common than depression although possibly not as a diagnostic category. Almost everybody knows what it’s like to feel anxious, worried, nervous, or panicky. And while it is normal and healthy to experiencing worry and concern there are times when it becomes too much.

    You might get familiar with some of these overwhelming forms of anxiety. They can include such things as chronic worrying, phobias, shyness, panic attacks, public speaking anxiety, obsessive thoughts or compulsions, worrying about your body either health or appearance, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

    If you are suffering from any of these forms of anxiety, or any other form of anxiety for that matter, what would it be worth to you to be completely rid of those anxieties? I believe that you can conquer those anxieties in a relatively short period of time without medication. However, it will take courage and effort.

    When we work together on your anxiety we will use four different models to understand and attack your problems.

    THE COGNITIVE MODEL: the cognitive model is based on the idea that it is your thoughts that generate your emotions. This is the basic model of cognitive behavioral therapy. Once we change the way you think about a situation you will be able to change the way you feel about the situation. If you have a fear of dogs you are most likely thinking, “that dog is going to bite me,” when you see a dog. However, if you change your thought to say what a cute puppy, then you would have no fear.

    THE EXPOSURE MODEL: the exposure model says that we cultivate the fear of avoiding what we are afraid of. If you are claustrophobic you might walk up 32 flights of stairs in order to avoid taking the elevator. With proper guidance, once you take the elevator up and find that it is not dangerous at all you will lose your fear of enclosed spaces.

    THE HIDDEN EMOTION MODEL: the hidden emotion model is based on the observation that people who suffer from anxiety are usually the sweetest people you can find. These are the people are very concerned about what other people will feel and will avoid anything to upset the next person. However, this is usually done so quickly that it is hardly noticed in the negative feelings resurface as worries, anxiety, or panic. Once the hidden feelings are brought out into the open the anxiety disappears.

    THE BIOLOGICAL MODEL: there are actually two types of biological models. One says that and anxiety medication will solve your problems. I do not work in that manner. The second type of biological model is that anxiety is associated with certain biological processes that are held in the brain and other organs of the body. When this happens it is useful to incorporate new patterns of behavior to address restructuring of the brain and body.

    Each one of these models can be very important and I try to incorporate all of them when I help my clients.
